We invite you to become part of a dynamic, collegiate, multidisciplinary Emergency Department team consisting of Fellows of Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEMs), Rural Generalists, salaried medical officers, interns, registrars and experienced and newly qualified nurse practitioners, registered and enrolled nursing staff.

The knowledge and skills that you bring to the floor of the Emergency Department matters. We believe the more you know, the better services we can provide. You will benefit from this unit’s strong focus on education, mentorship, and empowerment programs, this will help you identify and develop the skills to improve patient outcomes.

As you are aware, all facets of life converge in the Emergency Department: from neonatology to end-of-life care. You will see varied presentations from small sprains to potentially life-threatening trauma, mild shortness of breath to acute pulmonary oedema or minor headache to a major stroke. Mount Gambier ED is a non-bypass FACEM-run ED meaning you will be able to manage these challenging cases first-hand in a supported environment.

This role enables the requisite exposure to rural emergency cases to meet the requirements of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine Advanced Specialised Training in Emergency Medicine (ACRRM AST EM) and Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice (FRACGP-RG) requirements including the Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program (IEMTP), formerly Diploma of Emergency Medicine.

This position is available to Postgraduate Year 3 and above (PGY3+).

This position is best undertaken as part of rural generalist training through either GP College. Preference is given to applicants committed to a career in small town rural practice or regional emergency department service provision.

This position is based in the Emergency Department at Mount Gambier Hospital for the full calendar year. It is not expected that other rotations will be allocated during this period. If required to meet training obligations, time in the Anaesthetic Department can be negotiated.

I am unsure about moving to the country. Can I visit to look at the facilities prior to finalising my preferences?
We would encourage you to visit our beautiful city and enjoy the rural hospitality. Please let us know if you are planning a visit so that we can facilitate this, for example, with a tour of the hospital and point you in the direction of touring and entertainment.

Mount Gambier is the second most populated city in South Australia. It is located 17 kms from the Victorian border and lies approximately halfway between both Adelaide and Melbourne making metropolitan adventures easily accessible.

Striking the ideal balance between the vibrant lifestyle of the big city and comforts of a small town. In the heart of the Limestone Coast surrounded by signature wine region boasting social experiences including cellar door, picnics, tours and multiple food and wine festivals throughout the year.

Mount Gambier is the perfect base for exploration of the unique landscape and the natural beauty of our region– be it our iconic blue lake, our many caves, sinkholes, parks, and beaches. Mount Gambier offers opportunity for diverse recreational activities including diving, fishing, and water sports. For the elite or casual sporting enthusiast Mount Gambier also offers a strong team sport and athletic culture.

Will accommodation be provided?
You will need to arrange your own accommodation. Real estate agents can assist you with this. You will find rentals very affordable compared with the metropolitan area.

Will I be supported with relocation expenses?
We appreciate that moving house can put a strain on your finances, particularly prior to starting your new job. Please contact us to discuss the relocation support which may be available and the documentation you will be required to provide.

Will I need my own transport?
It is easy to get around Mount Gambier as most locations are only 3-8 minutes away by car, 10-15 minutes by bicycle. There is a limited public transport system (bus) which runs primarily between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm. Private transport is recommended to allow you to explore our beautiful region.

Do I need to arrange for a carpark?
The good news is that parking in all of Mount Gambier is free of charge. There is a secure staff car park on the Hospital site.

Can I get decent coffee and food in Mount Gambier?
Mount Gambier has a wide range of cuisines and fantastic coffee on offer. There are also several farmers’ and craft markets operating regularly throughout the South East along with the premium wine regions such as the Coonawarra to explore. The hospital has a café on site with a variety of food and coffee options.

Can I get my cultural fix of theatre, music, and cinema?
Absolutely!

No matter what your interests, the Limestone Coast has you covered. There are a range of food and wine festivals in our signature wine regions, to the Fringe and the various art/music festivals, street parties, market days, surfing competitions and various cycling and golf events. Not to mention Mount Gambier is also the home of the Generations in Jazz.

Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre is a fully equipped multi-purpose arts centre in the heart of Mount Gambier, accommodating a range of theatre, conferences, performing arts, film screening, seminars, music events. While the Riddoch Art Gallery is the largest SA Regional Gallery. The benefits of being approximately halfway between both Adelaide and Melbourne making metropolitan adventures easily accessible.

What should employees expect from the role?
The MGDHS Emergency Department has approximately 26,000 presentations each year. You will work in a well-supervised multidisciplinary team and see a wide range of acute and semi-acute medical and surgical conditions. With on the floor coverage for 16 hours from FACEM/RG until midnight, and FACEM/RG on-call thereafter. During this term you will gain clinical and procedural experience in the areas of management of emergency department presentations.

Will I be based at Mount Gambier all year? Will I be expected to travel to other country locations?
You will be based in Mount Gambier for the full year.

What are the key outcomes of the program?
The aim of this program is to provide trainees with sufficient clinical experience and supervision support to meet the logbook and work-based assessments of the ACRRM AST in Emergency Medicine or ACEM Diploma of Emergency Medicine. Candidates will also be supported to meet the external course requirements and assessments to achieve their qualifications and set them up to be confident working at the level of a GP Emergency Medicine provider.

What are the hours of work and overtime?
8 x 10 hour shifts per fortnight. Roster is according to organisational demand. TMOs and Registrars are required to complete morning, evening, night shifts and weekends as rostered.

What education is provided?
The unit has a strong learning focus with weekly protected teaching time for small group learning tutorials as well as more formal training including:

Advanced life support training.
Grand Rounds.
Regular logbook and learning needs review.
Regular in-situ simulations.
Tutorial program aligned to various EM curricular (including ACRRM AST, RACGP ARST and ACEM programs).

Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on ultrasound skill building in the unit.

How will supervision be provided?
Each shift there is a named supervisor on the floor for all junior medical staff who will provide direct clinical supervision.

Overall term supervision is provided by Dr Lauren Kennedy (FACEM) and Dr Gerhard Uys (FACRRM).

What other support is provided?
The Medical Education Unit have an open-door policy where trainees are welcome to discuss any issues or concerns.

Will the TMO supervise interns/others in their role?
Yes, they will work with the rostered supervisor on the floor to support interns, residents and medical students. This role will develop during the year as the trainee becomes more experienced.

What pathways are there after the year is completed?
Trainees are encouraged to view this position as a step in their pathway to providing rural generalist services to a community in rural South Australia. This position articulates with:

General Practice training.
Other advanced skills training positions in Anaesthetics and Obstetrics.

A further full-year training will be required to meet ACRRM Generalist Emergency Medicine (GEM), RACGP ARST or IEMTP requirements.

About the selection panel
The selection panel for this position includes: The Emergency Department Head of Unit, an ACRRM accredited AST EM/RACGP ARST supervisor and a member of the multi-disciplinary clinical team in the unit. The selection panel may also include a member of staff from the FRHSA TMO unit and the relevant regional training provider.

Eligibility

Both Australian trained candidates currently in PGY3+ and international medical graduates who have general registration and who will have at least 3 years clinical experience upon commencement are eligible to apply for this role. Candidates must have Australian working rights to be eligible to apply. Candidates must be available to work commencing on 2 February 2026.
Skills and Knowledge
Prerequisite Emergency medicine knowledge at PGY2+ level is assumed (see Australian Junior Doctor Curriculum Framework).

Other attributes required for this role include:
- Interest in experiencing the rural learning environment.
- Demonstrated high level communication skills both verbally and in writing.
- Professional integrity and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Ability to be adaptable to change.
- Sound experience in procedural skills.
- Sound examination and diagnostic skills in adult and paediatric medicine.
- Knowledge and awareness of quality improvement activities, clinical risk reduction and patient safety techniques.
Selection Process
The selection process will involve assessing your:
- Appropriate completion and verification of Application.

- Highly effective communication and collaboration skills in the clinical setting.
- Ability to succeed in attaining rural generalist Emergency Medicine qualifications during this position: such as ACRRM AST (EM), IEMTP, FRACGP-RG or equivalent.
