We invite you to become part of a dynamic and busy medical team within the Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN) for a full year of PGY2+ General Training/Rural Generalist Training based in Mount Gambier Hospital with the option for rotations to Naracoorte.

This program provides an excellent pathway into any specialty but can also be taken as part of rural generalist training through AGPT with either RACGP or ACRRM. Preference is given to applicants committed to a career in rural or regional practice.

Rotations are available in General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, General Practice/Anaesthetics and General Practice/Obstetrics.

FAQs

I am unsure about moving to the country. Can I visit to look at the facilities prior to finalising my preferences?

We would encourage you to visit our beautiful city and enjoy the rural hospitality. Please let us know if you are planning a visit so that we can facilitate this, for example, with a tour of the hospital and point you in the direction of touring and entertainment.

Mount Gambier is the second most populated city in South Australia. It is located 17 kms from the Victorian border and lies approximately halfway between both Adelaide and Melbourne making metropolitan adventures easily accessible.

Striking the ideal balance between the vibrant lifestyle of the big city and comforts of a small town. In the heart of the Limestone Coast surrounded by signature wine region boasting social experiences including cellar door, picnics, tours and multiple food and wine festivals throughout the year.

Mount Gambier is the perfect base for exploration of the unique landscape and the natural beauty of our region– be it our iconic blue lake, our many caves, sinkholes, parks, and beaches. Mount Gambier offers opportunity for diverse recreational activities including diving, fishing, and water sports. For the elite or casual sporting enthusiast Mount Gambier also offers a strong team sport and athletic culture.

Will accommodation be provided?
You will need to arrange your own accommodation. Real estate agents can assist you with this. You will find rentals very affordable compared with the metropolitan area. Accommodation is provided during Naracoorte rotations.

Will I be supported with relocation expenses?
We appreciate that moving house can put a strain on your finances, particularly prior to starting your new job. Please contact us to discuss the relocation support which may be available and the documentation you will be required to provide.

Will I need my own transport?
It is easy to get around Mount Gambier as most locations are only 3-8 minutes away by car, 10-15 minutes by bicycle. There is a limited public transport system (bus) which runs primarily between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm. Private transport is recommended to allow you to explore our beautiful region.

Do I need to arrange for a carpark?
The good news is that parking in all of Mount Gambier is free of charge. There is a secure staff car park on the Hospital site.

Can I get decent coffee and food in Mount Gambier?
Mount Gambier has a wide range of cuisines and fantastic coffee on offer. There are also several farmers and craft markets operating regularly throughout the South East along with the signature premium wine region The Coonawarra to explore. The hospital has a café on site with a variety of food and coffee options.

Can I get my cultural fix of theatre, music, and cinema?
Absolutely!

No matter what your interests, the Limestone Coast has you covered. There are a range of food and wine festivals in our region, the Fringe and the various art/music festivals, street parties, market days, surfing competitions and various cycling and golf events. Not to mention Mount Gambier is also the home of the Generations in Jazz.

Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre is a fully equipped multi-purpose arts centre in the heart of Mount Gambier, accommodating a range of theatre, conferences, performing arts, film screening, seminars, music events. While the Riddoch Art Gallery is the largest SA Regional Gallery.

The benefits of being approximately halfway between both Adelaide and Melbourne making metropolitan adventures easily accessible.

What can you expect from Rural Generalist / General Training?

Emergency Medicine
The MGDHS Emergency Department has approximately 26,000 presentations each year. You will work in a well-supervised multidisciplinary team and see a wide range of acute and semi-acute medical and surgical conditions. During this term you will gain clinical and procedural experience in the management of emergency department presentations.

General Medicine
During your General Medicine term, you will work closely with the consultant physicians to provide services to our General Medical, Rehabilitation and High Dependency wards.

Paediatric Medicine
During your Paediatric term you will work one-on-one with our resident specialists. As MGDHS is the primary referral centre for the Upper, Mid and Lower South East, you are likely to see an enormous range of clinical diagnoses.

During the Naracoorte GP Obstetrics rotation, you will provide both general practice services as well as working closely with Midwives and GP Obstetricians to deliver a range of obstetric services at Naracoorte Hospital. This includes:

Assessing antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal women.
Attending and assisting with labour and delivery, including assisted delivery (Ventouse or forceps).
Assisting at caesarean section.

During the Naracoorte GP Anaesthetics rotation, you will provide both general practice services as well as working closely with the GP Anaesthetists on the delivery, to provide Anaesthetic services to Naracoorte Hospital. These include:

Assessment of patients prior to surgery to formulate plans for anaesthetic and pain management.
Induction, airway maintenance, management, and reversal of anaesthesia.
Regional anaesthesia.
Caring for patients during their immediate post-surgery and recovery phase.

Accommodation will be provided for Naracoorte rotations.

There is also a Procedural GP rotation available at Kincraig Clinic. This combines GP Obstetrics and GP Anaesthetics.

Will I be based at Mount Gambier all year? Will I be expected to travel to other country locations?
Rotations are in either in Mount Gambier or, if desired in Naracoorte (which is approximately one hour from Mount Gambier). Accommodation will be provided during your rotations to Naracoorte.

What are the key outcomes of the program?
The aim of this program is to provide trainees with a well-rounded general year. In addition, if wished, you will gain sufficient clinical experience and supervision support to meet the logbook and work- based assessments requirements for RACGP hospital rotations and ACRRM Core Clinical Training.

What are the hours of work and overtime?
Your contracted hours are 76 hours per fortnight, and you will work a mix of early, late, and night shifts over a seven-day roster (depending upon rotation).

What education is provided?
The hospital has a strong learning focus with weekly small group learning tutorials as well as more formal training including:

RMO education program
Simulation sessions
Grand Rounds
Journal Club

How will supervision be provided? Will this vary from rotation to rotation?
Each shift the trainee will work with a named supervisor. As MGDHS is a consultant-run hospital, junior doctors work much more closely with consultants than is possible in many other health services.

What other support is provided?
The Medical Education Unit have an open-door policy where trainees are welcomed to discuss any issues or concerns.

Will the TMO supervise interns/others in their role?
In some units PGY2+ trainees will work other team members to supervise interns and medical students. This role will develop during the year as the trainee becomes more experienced.

What pathways are there after the year is completed?
The opportunities provided at MGDHS to work closely with physicians, surgeons, paediatricians, and emergency/critical care physicians. This sets you up well to progress to specialty training in any of these disciplines. These positions also provide an ideal entry into Rural Generalist Training Advanced Skill Positions in General Medicine, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Basic and Advanced Diplomas) are available, as well as Rural Generalist Emergency Medicine Training.

About the selection panel
The selection panel for this position includes members of the medical education unit and may include the Director of Medical Services/representatives from the medical liaison office.

Eligibility

Both Australian trained candidates currently in PGY1+ and international medical graduates who have general registration are eligible to apply for this role. Candidates must have Australian Working Rights to be eligible to apply. Candidates must be available to work commencing 2 February 2026.
Skills and Knowledge
Prerequisite medical knowledge and skills at intern level is assumed (see Australian Junior Doctor Curriculum Framework).

Other attributes required for this role include:
- Interest in experiencing the rural learning environment.
- Demonstrated high level communication skills both verbally and in writing.
- Professional integrity and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Ability to be adaptable to change.
- Sound experience in procedural skills.
- Sound examination and diagnostic skills in adult and paediatric medicine.
- Knowledge and awareness of quality improvement activities, clinical risk reduction and patient safety techniques.
Selection Process
The selection process will involve assessing your:
- Appropriate completion and verification of Application.

- Online referee reports (will be sent by SA MET once you have submitted your application, and it has been verified).
- Interview, as described below.
Following consideration of the above points, applicants will then be shortlisted for interview which may occur in person or via videoconference. SA MET will match the highest ranked candidates to these positions.
