We invite you to become part of a dynamic, collegiate, multidisciplinary Emergency Department team consisting of Emergency Medicine Specialists, GP Rural Generalists, a number of trainees from different College backgrounds, pre-vocational trainees and a wonderful group of experienced and newly qualified registered and enrolled nursing staff.

This role enables the requisite exposure to rural emergency cases and minimum one site (Mount Barker) is accredited for 12 months of training including TS4. Working with us will also fulfill the 6-month RRR term which is implemented in 2027.

This position is available to Postgraduate Year 3 and above (PGY3+).

Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network

The Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN) provides care for around 209,000 people living in the Barossa Hills Fleurieu area, including the communities of the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. BHFLHN is one of ten Local Health Networks including six across country South Australia. BHFLHN is incorporated under the South Australian Health Care Act 2008 and has a Governing Board which reports to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing.

The position is based in the Emergency Department at one of the following Hospitals:

Mt Barker District Soldiers Memorial Hospital
Southern Fleurieu Health Service (Victor Harbor)
Gawler Health Service (Gawler Hospital)

What should employees expect from the role?

Mt Barker Hospital
The Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Emergency Department is rapidly growing in presentation numbers and acuity, with approximately 35,000+ presentations predicted in the 25/26 year. You will work with the supervising Emergency Consultants (FACEMs and Rural Generalist GPs), sessional GPs and other Junior Medical Officers in providing emergency care and stabilisation for patients with a wide range emergency presentation. During this term you will gain a broad range of clinical skills and have great access to grow your procedural experience Shifts will be rostered across the 24/7 roster, divided into day, evening, and night shifts.

Southern Fleurieu Health Service
The Southern Fleurieu Health Service Emergency Department has approximately 20,000 attendances each year. The ED is a strong team environment with senior clinicians passionate about on the floor teaching with the opportunity for very practical hands-on experiences in a supportive environment. Shifts will be rostered across the 24/7 roster, divided into day, evening, and night shifts.

Gawler Health Service
The Gawler Health Service Emergency Department has approximately 30,000 attendances each year. The ED has a strong team environment with supervising Emergency Consultants; as well as sessional GPs and Junior Medical Officers attending a wide range of acute and semi-acute medical and surgical conditions. Shifts will be rostered across the 24/7 roster, divided into day, evening, and night shifts.

Will I be based at the primary site all year? Will I be expected to travel to other country locations?
Yes. Trainees are based at the one designated hospital for duration of their position.

Are contracts renewed every 12 months? If I want to stay on for an extra year, do I have to apply again?
With the new SA Salaried Medical Officers Enterprise Agreement, contracts for 3 years will be offered but can be negotiated for other periods of time.

What are the hours of work and overtime?
Applicants are rostered to work 76 hours per fortnight. Roster is according to organisational demand. Junior doctors (except PGY1) are required to complete day, evening, and night shifts. Rostering will be in accordance with the Salaried Medical Officers EA.

What education is provided?
Each of the sites have a dedicated teaching program with focus on emergency presentations. This also includes regular Mortality and Morbidity meetings, practical skills sessions and simulations. Depending on your training stage you will also be allocated to the appropriate exam teaching stream at an external site. Attending teaching is expected as part of your employment.

How will supervision be provided? Will this vary from rotation to rotation?
Each day there is a named supervisor on the floor for all junior medical staff who will provide direct clinical supervision.

Overall term supervision is provided by the allocated Director of Emergency Training (DEMT).

What other support is provided?
Regardless of where you work you will always have access to the Employment Assistance Program. Accredited sites offer a formalised mentoring program as well. Your DEMT or Head of Unit will always be ready to support you as well.

About the selection panel
The selection panel for this program will include, but not limited to, a combination of the following:

A representative from the Emergency Department Leadership medical group from one of the three sites.
A member of the emergency department consultant group
Medical Workforce Manager

Eligibility
Must have:
- Completed medical degree.
- Have full general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Have completed internship year.
- Be available for terms in 2027
- Be accepted/in the process of applying to the ACEM training program
- Must have Australian Working Rights.

Experience
- Successful completion of intern or intern equivalent program.
- Sound experience in procedural skills.
- Sound examination and diagnostic skills in adult and paediatric medicine.
- Good theoretical knowledge.
- Knowledge and awareness of quality improvement activities and clinical risk reduction and patient safety techniques.

The selection process will involve assessing your:
