About the Program
The Yorke and Northern Local Health Network, Rural Doctor Program (YNRDP) provides a broad range of unique clinical experiences in both hospital and primary care settings across the region. This opportunity is available for 1 PGY2+ doctor in 2027 who demonstrates genuine interest in a career in Rural Generalism with Advanced Skills in Obstetrics.
About The Rotations
The Rural Obstetrics and Paediatrics Rotation line provides a 12-month position with varied clinical experience across four different rotations with a focus on obstetrics. The year entails the following:
GP/OBSTETRICS: 3 month term based in Kadina and Wallaroo and supervised by Dr Anna Kearney. This term provides the opportunity to participate in the work of a rural GP Obstetrician as well as complete the ARANZCOG – Certificate of Women’s Health.
OBSTETRICS: 3- month term based in Port Pirie working alongside Obstetricians, Gynaecologists and experienced Midwives as part of an obstetric unit which also provides surgical care of gynaecology patients.
PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCY: 6-weeks spend at Women’s and Children’s Emergency and 6-weeks spent in Emergency at either Wallaroo or Port Pirie with a paediatric focus.
RURAL GENERALISM: 3 month term based in a small site of the doctor’s choosing (Crystal Brook, Clare or Jamestown). This term is spent working across both rural GP and small hospitals with RGs and GPOs.
To support the learning of this trainee, YNLHN will also provide the opportunity for the trainee to become certified in ALS2, NALS as well as provide opportunities to participate in relevant courses such as Rural Emergency Obstetric Training (ACRRM), OGET, Critically Ill Child Workshop, Implanon insertion training and more.
YNLHN will provide suitable accommodation across the course of this year and for the first two years of employment with YNLHN.

I am unsure about moving to the country. Can I visit to look at the facilities prior to finalising my preferences?
The Yorke and Northern Local Health Network welcomes anyone who is interested to tour our region, meet our staff, supervisors, and current cohort to get a “real” feel for the region.
Will accommodation be provided?
Yes, the Yorke and Northern Local Health Network will provide free accommodation for all new doctors for the first 2 years of employment. This is regardless of whether you choose to stay in one location or move rotations across the region.
Will I be supported with relocation expenses?
Yes, relocation expenses can be claimed up to $13,000 via reimbursement. Travel reimbursement to and from Adelaide up to twice a year is also included.
Will I need my own transport?
As our region is geographically vast and you may have the opportunity to attend educational activities or work-related commitments in other towns or outside of hours. Public transport options are not suitable to meet the full requirements of your role. You will, therefore, require a valid driver’s licence and vehicle.
Can I get decent coffee and food?
The towns within the Yorke and Northern local health network have a variety of food and coffee options to rival the best cafes in Adelaide. Delicacies made from locally sourced produce and made by locals! There are a number of restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and wineries within the region for you to enjoy. Larger towns such as Clare, Port Pirie and Kadina have multiple fast food restaurant chains open late for any late-night needs.
What is there to do in the areas?
The Yorke Peninsula, Southern Flinders Ranges, the Mid North, and stunning Clare Valley Wine region are all within our LHN. It is a beautiful and diverse area of South Australia. It comprises breathtaking national parks, walking trails, cycling, art and photography, outback camping, four-wheel driving adventures, swimming, snorkelling and a wealth of dining experiences including wineries, breweries, and distilleries. Most within a two-hour drive from Adelaide!
The Medical Education Unit encourage trainees to explore the region and integrate into communities, so we are committed to limited overtime, flexible working hours and a focus on wellbeing. Spending a year or more with us, allows you to fully integrate into local community groups, events, and charitable and sporting organisations. This is further supported through our work with the RISE (Rural Integration and Social Engagement) Program, allowing you to access funding to support your engagement with the local community.
Will I be eligible for the new Regional Incentive Payments?
Yes, most of the YNLHN is a MM5 and new doctors are paid accordingly. Please see link for more details.
