We invite you to become part of a dynamic, collegiate, multidiscipline Emergency Department team consisting of Emergency Medicine Specialists, GP Rural Generalists, a number of rural generalist trainees at various stages of training and a wonderful group of experienced and newly qualified registered and enrolled nursing staff.

This full-year role enables the requisite exposure to rural emergency cases to meet the requirements of the Australian College or Rural and Remote Medicine Advanced Specialised Training in Emergency Medicine (ACRRM AST EM) and FRACGP-RG ARST requirements including Diploma of Emergency Medicine.

This position is available to Postgraduate Year 3 and above (PGY3+).

We strongly encourage the successful candidate to enrol in a formal Rural Generalist Emergency Medicine training program. This post is best undertaken as part of rural generalist training. Preference is given to applicants committed to a career in small town rural practice or regional emergency department service provision.

I am unsure about moving to the country. Can I visit to look at the facilities prior to finalising my preferences?
We would encourage you to visit our beautiful city and enjoy the rural hospitality. Please let us know if you are planning a visit so that we can facilitate this, for example, with a tour of the hospital, and point you in the direction of touring and entertainment. Mount Barker is located east of Adelaide in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, boasting a range of activities from hiking and cycling to long lunches and wine tasting.

Will accommodation be provided?
As Mount Barker is an easy commute from suburban Adelaide, no accommodation will be provided.

Will I need my own transport?
Mount Barker has limited public transport options. Some sort of private transport is highly recommended as the town is spread over quite a large area.

Do I need to arrange for a carpark?
The good news is that parking in Mount Barker is currently free of charge. Some areas require permits and time limits, but generally it is easy to park in or around the Hospital.

Can I get decent coffee and food in Mount Barker?
Yes, and yes. Mount Barker offers a wide range of eating and dining options both within the town or in the outlying areas. There is a wide variety of cafes and restaurants providing excellent coffee and modern food choices.

What should employees expect from the role?
The Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Emergency Department is rapidly growing in presentation numbers and acuity, with approximately 25,000 presentations in the 22/23 year. You will work with the supervising Emergency Consultants; as well as sessional GPs and Junior Medical Officers in providing emergency care and stabilisation for patients with a wide range of acute and semi-acute medical and surgical conditions. During this term you will gain clinical and procedural experience in the areas of management of emergency department presentations. Shifts will be rostered across the 24/7 roster, divided into day, evening, and night shifts.

Will I be based at Mount Barker all year? Will I be expected to travel to other country locations?
Yes. Trainees are based in Mount Barker for the year.

What are the key outcomes of the program?
The aim of this program is to provide trainees with sufficient clinical experience and supervision support to meet the logbook and work-based assessments of the ACRRM AST in Emergency Medicine or ACEM Diploma of Emergency Medicine.

Candidates will also be supported to meet the external course requirements and assessments to achieve their qualifications and set them up to be confident working at the level of a GP Emergency Medicine provider.

Are contracts renewed every 12 months? If I want to stay on for an extra year, do I have to apply again?
With the new SA Salaried Medical Officers Enterprise Agreement, contracts for 3 years will be offered but can be negotiated for other periods of time.

We encourage trainees to remain in the department and join the roster on completion of their Emergency Medicine Advanced Skills post. We provide a transition process where early career rural generalists can continue to work in a well-supported Emergency Department until they are confident to take on a fully independent role in small town rural practice.

What are the hours of work and overtime?
Applicants are rostered to work 76 hours per fortnight. Roster is according to organisational demand. TMOs and Registrars are required to complete day, evening, and night shifts.

What education is provided?
The unit has a strong learning focus with weekly small group learning tutorials skills/simulation training and regular logbook and learning needs review.

Interdisciplinary training is provided through the following:

B-CET Skills and Simulation Workshops.
Emergency Education and Training (EMET) Evenings.
ED Mortality and Morbidity Meetings.

The Emergency Department is able to support and provide supervision to trainees wishing to complete a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Emergency Medicine.

How will supervision be provided? Will this vary from rotation to rotation?
Each day there is a named supervisor on the floor for all junior medical staff who will provide direct clinical supervision.

Overall term supervision is provided by at least one experienced clinician in the Department.

What other support is provided?
The Medical Education Unit have an open-door policy where trainees are welcomed to discuss any issues or concerns. The DCT and MEO also arrange confidential beginning and end of year appraisals as a formal time for trainees to ask for advice/support, highlight any concerns, discuss career pathways, and provide feedback about the training program.

Will the TMO supervise interns/others in their role?
There is no requirement to provide direct supervision, as there will be a consultant as supervisor each shift. However, in a supportive work environment, TMOs are expected to provide assistance and support to their colleagues, including interns and medical students.

What pathways are there after the year is completed?
Trainees are encouraged to see this post as a step in their pathway to providing rural generalist services to a community in rural South Australia.

This position articulates with:

General Practice training.
Advanced Diploma in Emergency Medicine.
Other advanced skills training posts in Anaesthetics and Obstetrics.
A further full-year training will be required to meet ACRRM Generalist Emergency Medicine (GEM) requirements.

Does this program meet RACGP and ACRRM Training Requirements?
Yes. The training meets the requirements of both RACGP and ACRRM Trainees in our Northern and Southern regions.

Where will I be based? Will I be expected to travel to other country locations?
Your primary site for the Academy will be either at the Riverland General Hospital in Berri (Northern region) or Murray Bridge Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Murray Bridge (Southern region).

Rotations to other towns in each region are at commutable distances.

What are the key outcomes of the program?
The pathway aims to provide Trainees with key ‘hands-on’ experiences in the management of patients in the rural setting, providing both primary care and inpatient care to local rural and remote communities.

The Core Clinical experiences are mapped to the requirements of RACGP and ACRRM.

This will serve as an excellent pathway for trainees interested in Rural Generalist Training or those intending to pursue General Practice or other Specialist training.

Are contracts renewed every 12 months? If I want to stay on for an extra year, do I have to apply again?
RACE PGY2+ contracts are for 5 years subject to entry being gained into either the RACGP or ACRRM Fellowship training programs before the end of your first PGY3+ year with us.

What are the hours of work and overtime?
Trainees are rostered to work 76 hours per fortnight and expected to participate in the general on-call roster. Actual hours of duty will be flexible as determined by the Health Service in order to accommodate the needs of the patient/ service provision.

What education is provided?
Generous education opportunities are available from the Medical Training Unit including tutorials, video-conference education sessions and journal clubs.

How will supervision be provided? Will this vary from rotation to rotation?
Trainees will work under close supervision and support of General Practitioner and other Specialist consultants, registrars, and term supervisors. The mix of General Practitioner and other Specialist Consultants will be appropriate to the specific rotation.

What other support is provided?
The Executive Director of Medical Services, Director of Clinical Training and Medical Education Officers are available for professional, administrative and welfare support. RACE will also provide access to a Learning Coach for each trainee.

The Medical Education staff has an open-door policy where Trainees are encouraged to discuss any issues or concerns.

Will the TMO supervise interns/others in their role?
TMOs may be required to assist in the learning experience of medical students and interns.

What pathways are there after the year is completed?
Trainees will be supported to apply for any specialist training program. The RACE Pathway provides for all requirements of the RACGP and ACRRM programs within the region, and for more limited rotations for other specialist pathways.

Eligibility
Must have:
- Completed medical degree.
- Have general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Have completed PGY2 year.
- Be available for at least 12-month full-time commitment commencing February 2026 (part time positions may be considered).
- Must have Australian Working Rights.

Selection Process
The selection process will involve assessing your:

Interview Process
