About the Program
We invite you to become part of a dynamic, collegiate, multidisciplinary team across multiple Departments at the Riverland General Hospital (RGH). This incorporates the Emergency Department, General Medical Department and the General Surgery Department. The Emergency Department team consisting of Rural Generalist and FACEM Specialists, salaried medical officers, a number of rural generalist trainees at various stages of training. There are also registered and enrolled nursing staff, dedicated administration emergency department clerks and an ED Administration Coordinator. There is also a psychiatry consult liaison service and allied health support Monday to Friday.
The General Medicine Department position involves providing medical inpatient and outpatient services to the General Medical Ward at Riverland General Hospital in Berri. It will involve some out of hours and on call work, supervised by a consultant physician. There is a tiered team including a physician consultant, a medical registrar, multiple RMOs, and intern and medical students. There is also a Rural Generalist team that services paediatrics and psychiatry inpatients, which is supported through the General Medical Team interns and RMOs.
The General Surgical Unit has 3 Consultants, a surgical registrar and an intern, as well as medical students working with the team. The Unit provides routine general surgery care through inpatient work as well as outpatient clinics and also works closely with the Emergency Department for acute presents 24/7.
This position is available to postgraduate Year 2 and above (PGY2+). This role is also appropriate for College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) trainees requiring rural rotation. Please include this within your Curriculum Vitae.
This post is best undertaken as part of rural generalist training through either GP College. Preference is given to applicants committed to a career in small town rural practice or regional emergency department service provision.

Riverland General Hospital
The Riverland General Hospital includes a modern 38 bed complex complete with a busy emergency department, emergency extended care unit, renal dialysis, and operating facilities. It provides 24 hours a day, seven days a week (24/7) accident and emergency services, acute inpatient care, maternal and neonatal services, elective surgery, renal dialysis, acute stroke, palliative, and rehabilitation. There is a Regional Cancer Centre providing chemotherapy and an Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Unit on site with specialist oncologist and resident psychiatrist. Additional services located onsite are radiology (including MRI), SA Pathology, clinical pharmacy, and Allied Health Services. Hospital services are co-located with community health services.
The hospital includes a modern 38 bed complex complete with a busy emergency department, high dependency unit, renal dialysis, and operating facilities. The hospital has high quality surgical, medical, and obstetric services that support a busy 24-hour Emergency Department that currently cares for approximately 16,000 patients per year. ED consultants are a mix of Rural Generalists and FACEM clinicians.
Rotations at RMCLHN
The post is based at the Riverland General Hospital for the full 3 years. It is not expected that other rotations, aside from those mentioned above, will be allocated during this period.
