About the Program

The Barossa Hills Fleurieu – Collaboration for Education and Training (B-CET) program provides the foundation for a clinical career as a hospital-based specialist, general practitioner, rural generalist, or other area of medicine.

Barossa Hills Fleurieu LHN offers a diverse range of clinical experience for the PGY2+ trainee in rural and remote primary care and hospital environments including Victor Harbor, Kangaroo Island, Mt Pleasant, Strathalbyn, Gumeracha, Gawler, Mt Barker, Kapunda, Tanunda and Angaston.

PGY2+ medical officers receive a three-year contract with the option of extension as part of the Single Employer Model (SEM) for Rural Generalist Training. TMOs work as part of a small clinical team developing close working relationships with their colleagues and gaining invaluable hands-on clinical experience in a supportive teaching environment.

B-CET FAQs

I am unsure about moving to the country. Can I visit to look at the facilities prior to finalising my preferences?
We would encourage you to visit the region. The area is home to historic towns such as Strathalbyn, Gumeracha and Tanunda and some of the fastest growing areas in the state, including Gawler, Victor Harbor and Mount Barker. Gifted with stunning coastlines, rolling hills, adventure, and culinary delights the Barossa Hills Fleurieu offers a bit of everything. Whether it’s a tree or sea change, the region can provide farm, forest and bush landscapes or pristine beaches and seaside towns.

Will accommodation be provided?
Accommodation is provided with several of primary care rotations eg Kangaroo Island and in some circumstances where you are undertaking a rotation outside your home region.

Will I need my own transport?
The region has limited public transport options. Some sort of private transport is highly recommended as the region is spread over quite a large area.

Do I need to arrange for a carpark?
The good news is that parking is is currently free of charge. Some areas require permits and time limits, but generally it is easy to park in or around the Hospitals.

Can I get decent coffee and food?
Yes, and yes. The region offers a wide range of eating and dining options with a wide variety of cafes and restaurants providing excellent coffee and modern food choices. The region boasts celebrated wineries and restaurants together with some of the best craft beers, gin distilleries and local fresh produce.

What can you expect from the B-CET Program?

Does this program meet RACGP and ACRRM Training Requirements?
For trainees wishing to pursue a career as a Rural Generalist or as a General Practitioner, the B-CET program enables them to complete all their training from internship to advanced skills training through to Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

In particular trainees may complete their paediatric requirements in the region for GP/Rural Generalist training and their anaesthetic, obstetric and emergency medicine requirements for ACRRM.

BHFLHN is accredited for the ACEM Associateship EM Program (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced) and the RANZCOG Associateship Program for Procedural and Advanced Procedural Training.

Where will I be based? Will I be expected to travel to other country locations?
Trainees are based generally at one of three sites in the region (Victor Harbor, Gawler – Barossa, Mt Barker – Strathalbyn). Trainees may select to work at another site in the region to broaden their range of experience and choice of rotations. Accommodation is provided in these circumstances to facilitate support the rotation.

What are the key outcomes of the program?
The program aims to provide TMOs with key experiences in the management of patients in the rural setting. The Core Clinical experiences are mapped to the requirements of RACGP and ACRRM.

The B-CET program provides an excellent pathway to grow the clinical and professional skills that provide the foundation for a clinical career as a hospital-based specialist, general practitioner, rural generalist, or other area of medicine.

BHFLHN is accredited for the ACEM Associateship EM Program (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced) and the RANZCOG Associateship Program for Procedural and Advanced Procedural Training.

BHFLHN has an increasing number of specialist training positions providing rural experience to trainees in tertiary based specialist training pathways including Internal medicine (BPT), Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine and Med Admin.

Are contracts renewed every 12 months?

What education is provided?

A wide range of structured training is provided including:

Weekly face to face Tutorials
Teams based TMO Case Discussions,
Monthly B-CET Skills/Simulation workshops
(One to one) Bedside POCUS Training

How will supervision be provided?
TMOs work as part of a small clinical team developing close working relationships with their colleagues and gaining invaluable hands-on clinical experience in a supportive teaching environment.

At the commencement of a rotation the Term Supervisor provides an orientation to the term, ensures continuing feedback and supports the trainee with the completion of EPAs and assessments. Trainees work with a range of senior clinicians/consultants who act as clinical supervisors and provide additional support, supervision and teaching.

What other support is provided?
A regional orientation at the commencement of the year together with weekly face to face training, monthly B-CET workshops and regular social activities foster the development of a strong peer to peer network and ensure a high level of support.

The DCT and MEO meet with trainees face to face each month as part of the B-CET workshop program and are available to meet individually to discuss issues and advise on career pathways.

Will the TMO supervise interns/others in their role?
TMOs may be required to assist in the learning experience of medical students and support interns. A senior supervisor is always present and on-site.

Eligibility
Must have:
- Completed medical degree.
- Have general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Have completed internship year.
- Be available for a 12-month full-time commitment commencing February 2026.
- Must have Australian Working Rights.

Experience
- Successful completion of intern or intern equivalent program.
- Sound experience in procedural skills.
- Sound examination and diagnostic skills in adult and paediatric medicine.
- Good theoretical knowledge.
- Knowledge and awareness of quality improvement activities and clinical risk reduction and patient safety techniques.
Selection Process
The selection process will involve assessing your:
- Appropriate completion and verification of Application.
- Required documents as outlined below.
- Online referee reports (will be sent by SA MET once you have submitted your application, and it has been verified).
- Interview, as described below.
All Expression of Interests are ranked for shortlisting. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a face to face or virtual interview via MS Teams.

  – In your Curriculum Vitae you are required to carefully document any professional development you have undertaken including academic and clinical achievements, quality improvements and research.
  – The contact details for three referees should also be current and accurate.
- Answers to Expression of Interest questions:
  – In no more than 300 words describe why rural general training interests you?
  – What experience have you had of either living and/or working in a rural area or what personal strengths do you have which will assist you to live and work within a rural community?
Interview Process
Applicants who are shortlisted for an interview will be notified by mobile phone and/or email.

The intention of the interview is to ensure that they are the best fit for the role. Interview is likely to include invitation to describe previous experiences and some scenario-based question with the aim to evaluate candidates against selection criteria which include:
1. Demonstrated ability to thrive in the rural context.
2. Highly effective communication and collaboration skills in the clinical setting.
